In addition to discovering a new city, usually with my co-adventurer P, I love filling my mind with art, food, fashion, design, books, and places I’ve never traveled to.

Currently obsessed with French bulldogs, fancy chocolate, perfect summer sandals, and a winter tropical destination. Her mother passed at the age of 56 following a near decade-long fight against ovarian cancer. Jolie made this difficult decision in thinking of her own children and empowering herself against cancer.

Her story came at an interesting time for me as I watch my own mother fight ovarian cancer. My mom was diagnosed in 2010 at the age of 55, and as our family recently learned, was one of many women who did not receive the most effective, life-elongating treatment early on. She had a full hysterectomy and went through vigorous chemotherapy, and thankfully was in remission by the summer of 2011. However, she never felt fully recovered as she watched her legs swell to four times their size for inexplicable reasons. Doctors told her that some things would never be normal again, but she began feeling pains in her abdomen and back again early this year. In March, she was diagnosed with recurrent ovarian cancer.

What really struck a chord in me with Angelina Jolie’s piece was that she mentioned how most women feel deeply powerless against cancer. As a woman who has always been fiercely independent, my mom is no exception. Even though she could rock a turban like nobody’s business when she lost her hair, and look effortlessly beautiful after a harrowing few days in the hospital, my mom has grappled greatly with the loss of control from being sick, drastic changes to her body, and a battle she never feels like she’s winning.

The doctors are feeling very optimistic about her current round of treatment, and my mom has just one more chemo session to go. The thing is though, we can’t know for certain that my mom will “win.” It’s what makes it all so scary. I am not trying to be defeatist, rather proactive and appreciative of what we do have control over. Recently I decided to empower myself in how I view cancer and all of life’s other unexpected hardships. I’ve learned that it’s not just my mom fighting, but everyone in our family’s lives coming together. And in being a part of my mom’s fight, we are each learning how to be stronger and better, and that is what I believe will be my mom’s ultimate victory.

Photo

womensweardaily:

Onsite for our upcoming exhibition at Crissy Field featuring Mark di Suvero’s iconic steel sculptures. Incredible to see these works in person especially knowing that di Suvero has long taken inspiration from the Golden Gate Bridge, which was his first view of new life immigrating to the U.S. as a child.

Three sculptures are up, five more to go!

Hi Christine! My name's Jasmine and I'm an Art History/Museum Studies major. My goal is to work in an art gallery or museum but so far I don't really know what type of jobs there are in art galleries/museums. Seeing that you seem to know a lot about this topic, I was wondering if you can give me some info on what job opportunities there are in this field. Also, what steps you took in order to get to where you are. You seem like a really cool person so I just thought I'd ask! Thanks! :D

Hi Jasmine! It sounds like you’re interested in either the gallery/museum setting, but if you haven’t already, I recommend you give some thought to whether you have a preference for one. That would significantly focus your search. A gallery is naturally more commercial, whereas a museum is more in service to the public. Regardless, you’d still be a part of the art world, but it helps if you feel more passionately about the gallery vs. museum mission.

In terms of job function, again, it can vary depending on the context, but I haven’t worked in galleries, so I’ll tell you what I know about museums. The collection and curatorial work are at the heart of most museums. From there, the various other departments interpret, integrate, support, and share the collection/curatorial vision, and altogether form the museum’s mission. A simple way to distinguish roles might be to think about whether you would be interested in working more externally to engage the public with art, or internally to help bring the art to the public. From there you can start to narrow down some more, e.g., [external] do you want to share the museum story with the public (marketing), donors (development), or educators/students/families (education) / [internal] do you want to research/publish/curate art (curatorial), work within the museum/other institutions to bring exhibitions together (exhibitions management), care for/restore art (conservation).

It’s a lot to think about, but the easiest way to learn more is by interning in a gallery/museum, especially one you really admire or enjoy visiting. That experience will help you better understand the distinction between all the different functions, and which you feel most passionately about. Interning is also how I got my foot in :) Once you’re in, great mentors are key.

A long response, I know, but hope it helps shed some light, and feel free to get in touch if you have any more questions!

a reminder

My girlfriend sent me this great piece about why you should travel while you’re young (I think I still qualify as kind of young). The call to travel resonated more than usual because I’ve been feeling that this is a particularly formative time in my life. I used to believe that life just happened and that I needed life to get better in order for me to get better. Though after some tough deaths in the family, and my mom’s continuous fight against cancer, I know that’s not the case; everything’s a choice. I’m learning that life has to be treasured in all its moments, even the most trying. So, although things aren’t perfect, I’ve chosen to find the life I’ve always wanted in what’s happening now because some things will always remain out of our control.

The travel post reminded me of a reminder list I wrote down some weeks ago and should reference more often:

NOW

Take full advatange of life’s opportunities

Manage the stress

Work hard

Connect with people

Learn. A lot.

Laugh. More.

Immerse in beauty

Read. Read. Read.

Travel

Be uncomfortable

Be stronger

Worship the body

Be grateful

LOVE

As an artist, Caitlin Freeman found her calling in cake.

She bakes at the cafe in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where the most popular item is a dessert inspired by the art of Piet Mondrian. It features geometric blocks of white velvet cake, colored red, blue and yellow, stacked together and “glued” with chocolate. It takes two days to prepare, according to her new cookbook, Modern Art Desserts.
