It’s been an intense few months so when P offered up an afternoon movie and meal the other week, I jumped at the chance to escape from work for a bit. The film of choice was Margin Call — the indie version of Wall Street 2 as he describes it — which as we learned, is showing in very select theaters. Thankfully the vintage cinema in Los Feliz was playing it, meaning we’d have plenty of options for a bite to eat afterward.
While I don’t head east as often as I’d like to, Los Feliz is one of my favorite LA neighborhoods (I pronounce it “feh-leese” but many debate that it’s “feeh-lehs”). Home to cultural landmark, Griffith Park, inhabited by some of the city’s most fashionably adventurous, and filled with tons of gems of restaurants, bars, and stores, Los Feliz is always worth the trek.
I love that the theater on Vermont Avenue is so intimate and still uses the original ticketing booth outside.
Right next door is Juicy Burger, claiming to serve one of the city’s best burgers. We decided to give it a shot, since burgers are also part of the ongoing sandwich tour, but were underwhelmed. It was great to have the classic counter, lettuce-tomato-ketchup & mustard combination, but didn’t think it warranted the “best” title.

Continuing down Vermont Avenue is Skylight Books — an incredible independent bookstore with two adjacent shops. Both stores’ exposed beams, brick walls, and wood finishing all give the right cozy feel to take your time to open your mind and enter Skylight’s fantastic world of books.

The larger store features a more comprehensive selection with plenty of staff recommendations in each category.

I’m also partial to stores with a varied selection of specially made greeting cards.

The other shop is a more art and design-focused space located right next door with a full magazine stand.

The final stop was Figaro, a darling French bistro and boulangerie, which transports you to the streets of Europe with cafe tables outside, banquettes and antique chandeliers inside.

After a burger, a proper bistro meal could not be had, but the bakery provided the perfect latte and macaron to go.
